Modelling or Modeling?
Modelling (“modelling” in American and Canadian English and ” Modeling ” is British English ) is considered to be different from other types of public performance, such as acting or dancing. Although the difference between modelling and performing is not always clear, appearing in a film or a play is not generally considered to be “modelling”.
How to become a model step by step
Modelling and marketing
You have to do the research and see which kind of modeling position will be achievable in your area, and many famous models they move to fashion or commercially active in the modeling business. If you live in the city that is not industrial or doesn’t have a demand for commercial models, it will not give you the opportunity to grow up your network, for example, if there is fashion show even small and you can be in a catwalk when so many photographers and media are taking your shots and posting it on their page that will help with your exposure and you will gain experience also to know what to do in bigger shows. Also, you will find a more creative artist who you may give you a chance to work with them in the future to build a professional portfolio, They can be photographer, designers, videographers, or journalist who they may approach you. and if you are not fashion model and you want to work in art section try to find that market first, lets say you are short and you want to be an editorial model or work with stock photo artist, you have to find the place where this market is available, and know what will be your ultimate goal in that situation,
- Some models they work for TFP even to promote themselves and gathering high-quality shots from TFP will build their portfolio without paying to the photographers or videographers or painters and sculptress
- Approaching the companies such as cosmetics, clothing, even food manufacturers, or anything that they need a model to promote it will be one of your daily tasks unless you just want some basic income.
- Searching for good photographers and videographers or designers or sculptress will be you another task because without them you will have no visual portfolio.
- Be active in the community and related people to the industry also will give you the knowledge and better connections, especially if you are in art, design, or film school being a model for their upcoming projects will help you to gain the experience and exposure.
- When you build the base of your portfolio you have to make decisions as if think this will be your future job what are you expecting from it and how far you will travel to be successful, will you go to next bigger city or some other country or not, and how much time and money you can expend to reach your goal?
- Remember facebook and Instagram or social media where public they give you 10000 like for your eyes or libs will not count when professional people are looking for models in their casting calls unless you had millions of followers, but acting and emotion, studying art and anatomy will teach you what to do when the times come, and you are in the stage or in front of those masters to prove yourself and be selected.
- you have to know your limit and be sure if you are capable of doing the modeling job as some models are just body parts model and some are good for facial emotions, anatomy or curve pose, and catwalk.
- Be a member of the social group or do research for auditions in media such as online websites and newspapers to be notified when some new auditions are happening.
- Follow the media and news of the day as you don’t want to look like someone who has no clue of what is going on in the world, but never get in politic talks at your auditions unless they need announcers or interviewer face and want to know how much you know about political matters of the world.
- One of the most popular websites is Model Mayhem that allows people to connect to the models in their area with the creative artist but not all of them are certified companies and its full of many ordinary people in it, its like a facebook or Instagram of the models so you have to make sure in advance before meeting someone there unless they are so famous in your area www.modelmayhem.com
Find a modeling agency and agent
If you passed all those portfolio building steps or not but want to move on as a model first thing you need is an agent, so try to find good agencies by searching their repetition in social media and by word of the mouth also on government and business registered company list and ranking.
- If modeling agency they asked for money upfront to promote you in their website that must be signed for you to ignore them, as they will earn a percentage of the model’s jobs income and if they have no power to cover the cost of your promotion, to find clients for you and them, they will never be able to find you a some good clients. Also, the small agency may pay you less but will be a good start to build your portfolio and get ready to approach big agencies. You can find the list of the agencies in most pupilar major websites on the search engine of the internet or your local phone book pages and newspapers classified section but the big agencies are always with the big players and listed in their website like www.models.com
Don’t expect to walk into a modeling agency, and expect them to sign you up as many people every day walking through their doors unexpectedly asking to meet with the owners of the agency and if they are real agency they will be extremely busy and usually have a fill out paperwork and photo submission for review. They almost never have time to see girls by just walking in. Know this ahead of time and get some practice behind your belt. If you do get called in for a meet and greet, you need to keep your look casual, yet also have a confident walk and not look fake.

( In any contract for under legal age contract parents of the child or guardian must be present to sign the agreement) This also depends on the countries law as legal age is different maybe even in some province of the same country.
- There are height requirements for runway models as 5’9″ usually and very few fashion/editorial models are under 5’8, most are 5’10 and taller. Also, male fashion/editorial models usually have to be at least 5’11, but even the big agencies in New York, Paris, and Milan are willing to make exceptions for a model who is so special. Some agents have been known to hire models who were 5′ 3″ and 5′ 4″ to top agencies Elite Model Management and Ford and d’Management in Milan, Italy represented Aaron Frew who was just 5′ 7″

Awareness in modelling
Beside danger of signing some unfair contract without understanding the legal term of those complicated words in agreement and having a lawyer, you have to be aware of many people will take advantage of models for their own ego even some modeling agencies, Also there are agencies that are just working with the nudity and porn materials and many scammers are posting ads of the few thousand dollars for example for few hour photo shoot, Even models they have very high income but if you are new in modelling is very dangerous to trust anyone.
- Professionals even do a credit check from a model in beginning to make sure they are not just criminal to steal their camera or equipment or they are not scammers to sue them and will never work with someone with no good reputation, you have to do the same before going to make a commitment to work with some agencies especially if they are unknown, and always ask for the copy of the contracts in advance and if be possible ask for legal explanation from lawyers or your local government service providers in legal issue, as many law schools also participate with governments to provide those kinds of service for free.
- As a model never bond yourself to a contract that can take advantage of you as there are exclusive and non-exclusive contracts.
- shooting in the set it can take hours and days depending on the final products they need from the shots and may involve traveling to a different location, city or even countries and sometimes they can’t stop working till they finish the shoot, like when they close a major road or locations.
- You may also have to wear what you don’t like or do something weird that’s why you have to know in advance about the project and do not accept it if is going to put you emotionally or physically in danger and will not be good for your public appearance and modelling image.
- Never post unprofessional nonsense on your portfolio socially which it can be used against your good reputations.
- Be aware when you going to the audition about what you have to take with you and be ready if they reject to hire you, someplace may even many people show up and you need to have a food and water with you if you want to stay in the line,
- You may be asked to cut your hair or grow your beard for the look they need or they may ask you to wear super high heels and walk with that or pose in cold, hot windy, snowy, rainy situation, or in some river or ride a bike, so know your capability and do not accept the offer if is not suit for you.
Knowing your values
Always try to find a professional and work with them to make more connection and take advice from them to learn more and more, but never jump on the invitation without research of their reputation.
- You have to know your potential and value, when you want quick route to fame and fortune, taking a gig for any opportunity with unprofessional amateur or by being promised to make you a superstar, it will not help you if you have a potential to be in the higher level of the modeling, you have to find a right market for yourself, and beware of scammers as the modeling world can be tightened with drugs, alcohol, sex-trades, rape, greed and more outside of modeling gigs if you get in with the wrong group. They may promise you to do this to get in the top and that must be an alarm sing for you to realize they are not professional and you as a model have a different value for them, and they want to take advantage of you and is your responsibility to stick to your goal if you choosing to model as a career and your profession,so do not let anyone take your dream away. by promising you nonsense, On the other hand, the right modeling agencies will honor your values and can lead you to a great career and future.
- Value is not just about the money especially when it comes to the health and life-threatening matters.
Headshot and Comb card
A comp card also called composite card, z card, zed card or sed card is a marketing tool for actors and especially models. The comb card serves as the latest and best of a model’s portfolio and is used as a business card. A comp card is an essential and very important item for any model, especially those models who are seeking agency representations and it should aim to leave a lasting and favorable impression upon first glance.Your comp card will be comprised of your best modeling images, therefore, you will need to have your portfolio in order before you move on to your comp cards.
A comp card shows 4 to 6 of a model’s photos and includes his/her stats and modeling agency contact information. In many cases, comp cards are your one and only opportunity to make a good first impression.
If an agency prints your comp cards they will put their logo on the card. Now that’s great for them – but then you can’t use the card at any other agencies. If you are only going to sign with one agency – you might as well not waste your time and money.
You must have 300dpi files to have good print and select only 5 of your best images that can describe and tell your story, and if you want to apply in many places the best way is to print the comp card by yourself in some good printing company with very high-quality print.
Your comb card must have your best headshots and without that, you won’t be able to approach the agencies and they don’t like the photoshopped edited version of your photos, they want to see who really you are and how you can be beneficial for their agency. They want to see you in the raw to see if you could be transformed into a variety of looks but do not fake yourself with your glamour shots.
When to start modelling
There are no age restrictions, but many models who they got to runway they have started in early age and gained experience, and met many connections unless you be some goddess that industry has never seen.
The age requirements for certain types of modeling ranges from high-fashion where age range is typically from 16 to 21 to child modeling where typical ranges are 2 to 12 years old.
Unless you seek out commercial modeling options, you just need to know the market for it based on the area you live and culture of it.
If you don’t look like a runway model, that’s fine, you can be an editorial model for print or be a model for art.
For elderly commercial products also they will seek mature and older people but usually, they will choose someone with experience, therefore who they have started at the early age has more chance.
Never push and sacrifice yourself in modeling to make someone else happy, as if is not for your own goal and you don’t enjoy the job you won’t be able to do it for a long time as a professional career and be a successful and happy model.
